More Like Jesus
We all have those days where we feel so fired up about living for Jesus, and we want to dig into His Word so we can learn more about how He wants us to live as His people. But I’m pretty sure we also have those days where it just feels like we can’t do anything right. It seems like there are so many do’s and don’ts listed in Scripture, and we feel so bogged down with it all because we keep messing up. We’re just left wondering… well, how am I supposed to live this out? What does this even mean?
Oh, I have days I lose the fight
Verse 1 selection “Less Like Me” by Zach Williams
Try my best but just don’t get it right
Well I talk a talk that I don’t walk
And miss the moments right before my eyes
Somebody with a hurt that I could have helped
Somebody with a hand that I could have held
Some of you might recognize the acronym WWJD… “What Would Jesus Do?” This is a great question to ask ourselves, but how are we supposed to know the answer if we don’t know how Jesus lived while He was here on earth? We might know what we should be doing, but do we know how to apply that in our daily lives? If we take a look at Scripture in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, we get a snapshot of how Jesus interacted with other people – how he treated them, spoke to them, listened to them, corrected them, healed them, comforted them, and forgave them. He not only gave us teachings on the right way to live, but He demonstrated how to live it out, too!
Yeah, there’s no denying I have changed
Verse 2 selection “Less Like Me” by Zach Williams
‘Cause I’ve been saved from who I used to be
But even at my best I must confess
I still need help to see the way You see
In order to have the frame of mind to live the way Jesus lived, we first need to allow Him to fill us with His Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). We need to have a willing heart so that when He prods us to do something, we will know what to do and how to do it. He might be placing it on your heart to give that homeless man a warm coat or a bottle of water. Maybe He’s telling you to text that person and tell them that He loves them. Perhaps He’s placed someone in your life He wants you to befriend because they’re going through a hard experience that you’ve gone through in the past. Maybe that person cried out to God, desperately asking Him to show them that He’s there. You may be the person God chooses to show them His love and presence. You never know when or how God may be prompting you to fulfill His will in your’s or someone else’s life. We desperately need His help to see people the way He sees them – as beautiful, valuable, precious human beings that were made in His image (Genesis 1:27, Psalm 139:13-17). We also need His prompting to treat them the same way He would treat them. This kind of filling of the Holy Spirit happens through prayer and seeking His wisdom by reading the Bible!
Oh, I want to feed the beggar on the street
Bridge “Less Like Me” by Zach Williams
Love to be your hands and feet
Freely give what I receive
Lord, help me be
I want a friendship first above all else
Love my neighbor as myself
In the moments no one sees
Lord, help me be
Our role as Christians is to believe in the Lord Jesus for our salvation and to share our faith with others so that they may also be drawn to Him (Matthew 28:19)! We are His hands and feet in this world, to treat others the way He would treat them. To love them as He would love them (John 3:16, John 13:14, Mark 12:29-31). To give them mercy and forgiveness as He has given to us (Ephesians 4:32)!
A little more like mercy, a little more like grace
Final Chorus “Less Like Me” by Zach Williams
A little more like kindness, goodness, love, and faith
A little more like patience, a little more like peace
A little more like Jesus, oh, a little less like me
A little more of living everything I preach
A little more like Jesus, a little less like me
Oh, a little less like me
We should strive to live in a way that glorifies God by following the example of Jesus. When we begin to live like Him, people will see the light inside of us and try to figure out why we act the way we do (Matthew 5:14-16). It may even inspire them to seek the Lord themselves. This is our purpose – to point people to Jesus in the way we speak and act, so that He may be glorified and others may be saved!
