Meaningless without God
Do you ever feel like every day is the same, and you’re just stuck in an endless, meaningless cycle of nothingness? Everything just keeps repeating itself and you think to yourself… “what’s the point?” Yeah, I’ve been there. And now I’m going to share with you how I’ve gotten myself out of that mindset. It’s a dangerous place to be in, and Satan would love to keep you there. He would love for you to feel worthless and miserable. But guess what… NOT TODAY SATAN (James 4:7; 2 Corinthians 4:4). We are children of the MOST HIGH GOD and He has such an intense love for us that He came down to earth to be crucified and rise again from the dead in order to give us hope and salvation (John 3:16)! So… here’s where this Wednesday’s worship song comes in.
This might hurt, it’s not safe
Verse 1 “The Motions” by Matthew West
But I know that I’ve gotta make a change
I don’t care if I break
At least I’ll be feeling something
‘Cause just okay is not enough
Help me fight through the nothingness of life
Living all out for Jesus and taking a stand for our faith can be scary! It can cause a lot of upheaval in our lives. It can literally change everything. It can cause people to judge us or forsake us. But living in a cycle of meaninglessness and just trying to find temporary pleasure in superficial ways is not living for the Lord (1 John 2:15-17)! That’s not going to strengthen our faith or give us purpose in life. That will only drag out our feelings of worthlessness. We need to ask God to help us fight the urge to be complacent and lukewarm (Revelation 3:15-16). We need to hand over our lives to Him so He can use us to our full potential!
I don’t wanna go through the motions
Chorus 1 “The Motions” by Matthew West
I don’t wanna go one more day
Without Your all consuming passion inside of me
I don’t wanna spend my whole life asking
What if I had given everything
Instead of going through the motions?
If pursuing God and His will for my life will give me purpose and hope, I want to chase that! I don’t want to waste one more moment wallowing in self-pity or sadness or hopelessness. We can have such joy in Christ because of the salvation He has given us! He is literally all that matters – everything else is meaningless (Ecclesiastes 12:13)! And if everything is meaningless except God – then what are we doing living with the purpose of pleasing ourselves and other people? If we live for God, everything will be filled with hope. Yes, of course, it isn’t going to be easy living for God. We’re going to be judged and ridiculed and embarrassed and rejected. We’re definitely going to stand out from the crowd. We’re not necessarily going to have the easy life on earth. But when we get to Heaven to live eternally with our Father, it will all be worth it – and literally nothing else will matter except how you lived for Him.
No regrets, not this time
Verse 2 “The Motions” by Matthew West
I’m gonna let my heart defeat my mind
Let Your love make me whole
I think I’m finally feeling something
‘Cause just okay is not enough
Help me fight through the nothingness of this life
In the lyrics above, I really think it should say “I’m gonna let Your heart defeat my mind.” Because honestly, my heart goes all over the place. I can’t trust my own feelings or emotions all the time – and following my heart is definitely not going to lead me to God 100% of the time (Jeremiah 17:9)! So I can’t rely on my own heart… but I can rely on God’s heart. If we let God encompass our lives, He will most definitely always lead us to Him.
The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name. Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings. Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.
Psalm 23, NLT
